The Lengenday Jeru the Damaja
| Jeru the Damaja was raised Kendrick Jeru Davis in Brooklyn, NY. Young Jeru began writing rhymes when he was ten years old. He met Guru and DJ Premier of the group Gang Starr in high school and began work with them on their 1992 album, I'm the Man, and toured with them throughout 1993. Jeru then followed the tour with his solo album, The Sun Rises in the East, in 1994. The album received good reviews; but it was Jeru's words not on the album that gained all the attention. He was criticized for his verbal attacks on artists such as the Fugees and Puff Daddy (now P. Diddy)- Hip-hop giants of the time. Jeru called himself a prophet and claimed his purpose was to be the Savoir of Hip-Hop. He did not like the direction rap was following in the mid nineties and wasn't shy about sharing it. |
